The Naniwa Nagura Dressing Stone is an excellent addition to your Naniwa honing set. During razor honing, your stone's surfaces can become 'dirty' due to metal filings, or swarf, removed from the razor. Apart from making your stones look less appealing, swarf buildup can also slow down the sharpening process. It's ideal to hone on a clean stone. While a lapping stone could clean your Naniwa Super Stone's surface, it would remove too much material. Here's where the Dressing Stone comes in - to maintain your stones' best condition between lappings. Unlike water stones, the Naniwa Nagura Dressing Stone requires soaking before use. After use, thoroughly rinse both your Naniwa Super Stone and Nagura Dressing Stone to remove any residue.
